Glorious Yummy Happiness

A few weeks ago when Scottie picked me up from work we headed over to Grandma Bott's house to say "Howdy" and to check on the garden (okay I was hoping the peaches were were ready for plucking; I had a major jones for peaches!) After stopping in the house and getting a love from Grandma we headed out back.

I sat down on the back stoop kicked my shoes off and felt the grass between my toes. I could smell Grandma's beautiful mini roses in full bloom next to me. I could see Scottie's smile as he ran barefoot up down the rows looking at all the glorious and yummy goodness that only home gardens can have. I watched him stop and sample tomatoes, dig around for potatoes, his head popping up and down in the corn, the whole time listening to him as he shared with me his daily news, what he had learned at school that day, what he happenings in the world he had read about, and how much he loved Grandma's tomatoes. The whole time there were these giant colorful dragonflies looking for dinner or resting on the clothes line that hasn't been used for years.

I remembered coming over the first summer we were married and helping Grandma Bott weed all of her flower beds, and she has quite a few! She would tell us stories of her past and tell us all about her flowers. The story I love the most is about Grandpa and how he made sure there wasn't any rocks in the dirt when they first moved there. Even today the dirt is quite rock free!

I thought back to the garden planting parties we have had, followed with a weenie roast and all the potato, frog eye, and desert salads you could want. I thought of all the nieces and nephew running around happy to be together. Watching them "help" Grandpa plant the peas. The parents all laughing and joking together while Momma and Grandma grinned from ear to ear watching all of us.

I thought about this last summer and the changes it's brought. Grandma hasn't been able to go out and see all the beautiful plants around her. We always make sure that she knows how lovely her flowers are, and that her fridge always has enough fruits and veggies from her garden, but it's not that same and you can see it in her eyes. She loves getting that dirt on her hands. In my opinion that's why she's lived such a long and good life.

It was a perfect moment. I've been thinking about that day for weeks now. I love how simple, yet full that moment felt. It was just what I needed to feel, I needed that reminder that Life is okay. That at that moment all over Brigham, no all over the world, there were others just enjoying the simple moments in life.  Be it in their own gardens, tickling a child, cuddling a loved one, biting into a yummy cupcake, enjoying the fruits of their labor, or walking hand in hand with someone special.   Even though there is much turmoil and stress right now, there is still goodness out there to be found and enjoyed. Though we are uncertain about the future, even the present, there is a plan and it will all work out. In the end there will be happiness.

Until then we can kick off our shoes and run through the dirt and grass. Oh and eat yummy peaches!
